How to Read Gigantic Words: Practice - Map it (Grades 4-8)

$17.38 CAD

These engaging multisyllabic word - mapping activity pages are easy to prep and easy to use. Just print and go!

The Science of Reading helps us understand the importance of mapping sounds (phonemes) to their spellings (graphemes.) Just as early readers map phonemes to graphemes, orthographic mapping can be applied to morphemes (prefixes, roots, words, suffixes) as well.

Just as early readers learn to segment the sounds in a word, advancing readers in the upper grades learn to segment the morphemes in multisyllabic words. Once readers have successfully mapped phoneme-graphemes and morphemes, they are able to successfully sound out new words, setting the stage for automaticity and fluency.

Students work with 3 words on a page. For each word, students:

•SEE the word parts modeled for them: (pre - view - ing)

•WRITE the word parts in the blank boxes under the modeled word.

•TAP the parts.

•HEAR & SAY the parts.

•HIGHLIGHT the word parts in the boxes.

•CIRCLE the word parts in the word.

•Complete the MAZE.

•READ the words.

The morphemes in each word are labeled: prefix, root, word, suffix as background information for teacher and students.
