Word Parts: Guided Practice - Race Car Game (Grades 3-8)
•Develop SPEED and FLUENCY reading multisyllabic words through GUIDED PRACTICE.
•Help your students LEARN TO PRONOUNCE Word Parts in order to Decode Multisyllabic Words!
Time your readers as they run real matchbox cars - or their pointer finger - around the race track!
Students will pronounce each word part as they go around (10 word parts per track.)
Record student times on the SPEEDY READER SPEED STATS TIMING SHEETS with: COLD, WARM, HOT and SMOKIN' times.
Best as a GUIDED PRACTICE ACTIVITY: a wonderful opportunity to teach or reteach word parts as your student drives around the track. (Students need to correctly read each word part in order to move on. When students encounter a word part they don't know, or read incorrectly, I tell them the word part (the RETEACH/GUIDED PRACTICE component). The student then correctly reads that word part and continues driving. The time taken for reteaching/guided practice allows the student the chance to significantly improve their time in subsequent drives - adding to motivation, enjoyment and pride.
I use this in SMALL GROUP TIME and for INDIVIDUAL PROGRESS MONITORING.
